So you’ve seen my photos from Thailand here. Now it’s time to share with you the random iPhone photos I was able to get of myself as well as a few borrowed from friends who were there. My face obviously spends most of it’s time behind the camera. So I am grateful to have a handful of photos that I can cherish forever from my time in Thailand.

PS- Excuse the way I look. It was hot in Thailand ya’ll. I pretty much stayed a sweaty mess the whole trip. Well, we all did! Oh well, the sacrifices we make to have an adventure!

One of my favorite things I did while there was visit the Maetaeng elephant camp outside of Chiang Mai. They have so many amazing elephants there! I took an hour ride on the back of one. We did a trek into the jungle and I LOVED EVERY SINGLE MINUTE. We went through the river and over the hills. It was like a genuine real life adventure. All I could keep thinking the entire time as I looked off into the Thailand hills, was “THIS IS LIFE”. We can easily get so caught up in our fast pace lives. But it’s SO necessary to sometimes stop, take a deep breath, and SOAK IN the amazing beauty all around us. Even if it’s just breathing in a sunset, or cuddling your pup. ABSORB LIFE.

So after our trek, we came back to the camp and watched the elephants dance for us and PAINT PICTURES. You think I’m kidding? NO. They have 3 elephants that know how to paint actual pictures of trees, flowers and elephants. I CAN’T EVEN DRAW AN ELEPHANT!!!! SERIOUSLY! And the elephant in the picture below is only 7 years old! I still haven’t really gotten over it. I mean, for real… an elephant that can paint is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. God’s creatures are so incredible. I loved my time with these beautiful gifts from God!

The following photos are a random collection of moments. From our lantern release party, to snorkeling with a million fish, to visiting Buddha.

TIGERS. Pretty much since I was a little girl I have been obsessed with this magnificent creature. Jasmine and Rajah? Yep, obsessed. I was beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the Tiger Temple. I got to spend about 3 or 4 hours with tigers and there will never be words to describe how amazing that was. I’ve played with tiger cubs in the past before, but never adult tigers. First, I went into the den of tigers and got to lay several of them in my lap. Mostly the young-ish ones, but I did get to lay one full grown bad boy in my lap and WOW was that intensely incredible in every way. (Photo to the right, one down.) These animals are so sweet and kind but of course you are taking a huge risk being that they are still a wild animal. It’s very scary but worth every moment of fear. Then I got to feed a tiger. Yep, that’s chicken in my hand (top right photo). The bottom photos on the left and right are the moment I got to play with the tigers. UM, TALK ABOUT SCARY. They put you in their swimming area, let you get in the water with them (them as in several adult tigers), hand you a stick with a plastic bag on the end of it and tell you, “no matter what, don’t run… or YOU will become their toy.” — ahhhhhh! I will not lie, this was not like letting them lay in your lap. This was INTENSE. Tigers are obviously huge animals that want to play rough. We played with them by teasing them with this stick toy.. kind of like you tease a cat with a string or such. So as you can see in the bottom right photo, I was teasing the tiger with my “toy”, and in the bottom left, he attacked it. They jump EXTREMELY high in the air when they attack and they actually jump AT YOU. Let me tell you, it’s scary when a 600+ lb. tiger is jumping at you. EEEEEEEEEK!!! It was so worth it though. I mean, who gets to play with tigers everyday right????  AMAZING.

This last set of photos are also so special. In the bottom left you can see me and my sweet sponsor child Duangdao. Meeting her was definitely the number ONE highlight of my trip to Thailand. In the middle you can see the group of amazing people I had the opportunity to go on this trip with. I will never forget the time I had with each of them and the INCREDIBLE memories we made.

I cannot wait to go back to Thailand. There is so much more adventure to have. XO

I won’t make any excuses for how long it has taken me to put this post together. It’s been exactly a year since we went to Peru and I am so ashamed it has taken me this long. I am completely head over heels in love with this country.. for many reasons. So it takes a little bit of an emotional toll on me to have to dive my mind and my heart back into the memories of this trip and this country. I believe that is why I have put this off for so long. But here I am, ready to face it and write about this trip. I can already feel the tears forming as I type this.

If you know anything about me at all, you know how much I love Peru. I spent a big part of my life there and it has had a huge impact on my life in so so many ways. I love love the people of this country. They have the most beautiful hearts and humble attitudes. Spending time in this country changed my life so much. It is truly one of the main reasons I am always so grateful for the blessings I have in my life. Most of the people in Peru will never even come close to having what I have. And it’s a thought that will break your heart and humble your soul all at once.

Something I have always wanted to do was to share this huge piece of my heart with others. I wanted to create the opportunity for other people to be able to experience this INCREDIBLE country. I decided I would put together a trip for anyone who wanted to go. This was my very first time planning a trip for a group. I have planned many for just myself but this was a whole new experience! It was definitely super scary at times to feel so responsible for creating an adventure for others to enjoy. And I wanted so badly to make sure they not only had fun, but that their lives were changed in some way. I knew it wouldn’t be hard, because Peru just does that to you.

I set the trip date and let people know that even if they couldn’t go, if they had toys or clothes to donate to please send them our way. Thank you to all of you who donated items because we brought 7 suitcases full of toys and clothes to the orphanage! And even had stuff we had to leave behind. What an amazing blessing that was. They were so so truly grateful for such a surprise.

Seven amazing people signed up for the trip and off we all went on our 10 day adventure.

The first 4 days I had planned for us to spend with the kids at the orphanage. Growing up in Peru I was always involved with several ministries there but my absolute favorite was always the orphanage. The kids there captivate your heart and you never ever forget it. It was the obvious choice for part of our trip. I really wanted this trip to be a fun adventure. But I didn’t want it to only be the tourist things. I wanted part of it to be the real Peru, the parts most people don’t see. I wanted to allow these 7 other people to really feel what I had felt growing up in Peru. And I knew the orphanage would allow them to have their hearts captivated like mine had been so many years before. We spent our 4 days with them playing with them every moment. Reminding them that they are loved and they are precious. Children in Peru are nothing like children in America. These children will cling to you immediately. They want to hold your hand, hug you, laugh with you and never let you go. Just the simplest hug or smile makes them so happy. They don’t need gameboys or xboxs to be happy. They just want love. It will truly change your life. It breaks my heart every time I visit because I just want to take them all home and hug on them forever. These 4 days were amazing. I got to be a kid again as we taught them games like red rover, red light green light, duck duck goose. It was so much fun. It wasn’t easy to say goodbye to them. Our last day we all paid to have a bbq with them. And then that night as we said goodbye and loaded up into our van, they surrounded it and begged us not to leave. Talk about rip you to shreds. We fell in love with them and they fell in love with us. It wasn’t easy to leave. But we did and off we went on the rest of our adventure.

I wanted the other 4 days to be pure fun and excitement. So we hopped on a plane and headed to Cusco – one of the most beautiful cities in Peru. It was one of the places I lived and I knew it had to be part of our adventure. We explored the town, the churches, the food. We stepped outside the city to visit the local ruins. We took a whole day to explore the Sacred Valley (another place I lived once). And of course, I saved the absolute best for last… MACHU PICCHU. One of the wonders of the world. I have been to Machu Picchu three times now (first time was when I was 13) and it never ceases to take my breath away. It is truly the most beautiful and magical place I have ever been. I cannot describe it. And there are no photos that could ever portray it properly no matter how hard anyone tries. It’s true magic cannot be captured. Machu Picchu is one of those places everyone should see if they can at least once. I LOVE IT. I knew this would definitely be a highlight of the trip and of course it did not fail me.

I loved sharing this huge piece of my heart with my new 7 friends. We made memories to last a lifetime and I will never forget this trip. It was so special to me for so many reasons. I was so proud to be able to put together such a fun, life-changing adventure and thrilled to be a part of it. I can’t wait to do it again.

I will let the photos share the rest of the story now.

Our first day there we went to a summer camp that the kids from the orphanage were attending. They took us to a really fun little hidden treasure of water and rocks where you could dive in and swim. It was a great way for the kids to get comfortable with everyone and have a great time as well.

Our super cute hotel near the orphanage:

The next 3 days we spent at the actual orphanage, teaching the kids games and having an amazing time with them.

One of the rooms at the orphanage.

Love this photo! All of us with the children plus their dogs.  : )

I was able to go back to the orphanage about a month after the trip for a couple of photo projects. One being to photograph each of the children individually for the church’s database. Below are a few of the beautiful children who live there. If you would like to learn more about the children’s home please click here. <– you can also make a donation.

Part two of the trip: CUSCO!!!

Cusco is so beautiful, and at a very high altitude. So it can be hard to breathe if you don’t take it easy. But it has some of the bluest skies you will ever see.

Seriously love the kids of Peru! How cute are they??

Little cute guinnea pigs. Little do they know they are about to become supper. (not for me!!!) Yes, this is a delicacy in Peru.

Exploring the Cusco area.

Exploring the Sacred Valley.

Pictures truly do not express the beauty of the Sacred Valley. It’s so majestic. I always feel so much closer to God there. It’s hard to explain.

The little tiny rainbow is there every single day at this time of day.

I don’t know why, but I just love this photo of one of the locals laughing at her little lamb trying to dance. It was so cute.

The sunset that evening was so incredible. The picture doesn’t really do it justice.

But it was like the sky turned into fire.

That night we headed back to Cusco for a night of fun in the Plaza de Armas.

Human planking in the Plaza De Armas. haha

This would be me having a laughing fit on the ground… nothing to see here people.

Just skipping along the cobblestone road, creating memories forever.

The next day we took a long train ride to the bottom of a magical mountain. Then we took a bus to the top of that mountain where the stunning Machu Picchu lay.

Takes my breath away.

So extremely grateful for this trip. I will cherish it forever. Thank you Colleen, Andrea, Jake, Sherry, Krystina, Courtney and Beth for joining me on this Peruvian adventure. I look forward to sharing more memories and more adventures with each of you.

VIDEO COMING SOON.

Wow. I often wondered what you were taking pics of…. Now, I know. Thank you so much, Courtney. My life was truly changed by this trip. Let me know when you’re ready for round 2, I’m in!!ReplyCancel

I have been wanting to go to Thailand for YEARS. I have always been intrigued by it and also have heard nothing but amazing things about it. I was thrilled to finally be making it happen. And I can honestly say, I am SO ready to go back and see more of it. I loved my time there but I still want to see more of this amazing place!!! I will be back for sure. The people were so humble and so kind. And it was so much fun getting to travel all over this amazing place to explore and discover so many wonders. I loved every single moment of it. But if I had to say what my favorite moments were, it would definitely be… 1. meeting Duangdao 2. playing with tigers 3. riding elephants  — I LOVE THAILAND. Already planning to go back and see more!

Personal iPhone photos coming in the next post.

The first part of the trip was spent in Bangkok:

Bangkok at night.

I swear, I want cut out plant elephants in my yard. How could you not smile every day when you look at them?? SO CUTE.

Ancient city of Ayuthaya, former capital of Siam.

The AMAZING Tiger Temple!! I don’t have many photos like this from that day because I ended up playing, bathing, feeding, cuddling the tigers instead of taking their photos. Those pictures are coming in the next post. But this day, was just incredible. Just hanging out with tigers.

Huuuuuge buddha.

Medium buddha.

Tiny buddha.

I LOVE making children laugh.

And the following photo is proof that I am hilarious.

I LOVED this moment. I came across these beautiful little Thai girls performing traditional Thai dances. It was amazing.

Sukhothai was my very favorite temple/ruins. It was SO BEAUTIFUL there!

I got to visit the silk and umbrella making factories! Quite fascinating.

On one of the last days there I was able to go visit the exotic island of Koh Talu. GORGEOUS and so deserted and peaceful.

On one of our last nights there we sent off lanterns from the beach into the sky with our wishes attached to them. It was truly a beautifully intimate moment and one I am so grateful for.

Personal iphone pictures coming up next! Including my time with the tigers as well as elephants!!

I’m not sure words, photos or videos could ever truly portray or describe the day I had with Duangdao. If you’re not sure who this beautiful little girl is, I will explain. Almost 3 years ago I decided to begin sponsoring a child in Thailand through an INCREDIBLE organization, Compassion International. You can read all about why I chose to do this at the post that I wrote here. Ever since I began, I always had in my heart that someday I would visit her and meet her. Last year I decided 2012 was that time. I contacted Compassion, and after a few emails of coordinating everything, it was set up. I must say how extremely pleased I was with how Compassion handled everything. Duangdao and her family live near Chiang Rai, an area that is about 2.5 hr drive from the closest city I was going to be on my trip, Chiang Mai. I wasn’t sure how it would all work out, but Compassion let me know that they could arrange to have Duangdao transported to Chiang Mai for a day to visit with me and suggested we all go to the zoo together. BRILLIANT.  I couldn’t have been more excited about it all. I couldn’t believe how amazing they were to set everything up for me and even planned on picking me up from my hotel and everything. How amazing is that?

I won’t lie.. I was a little nervous before meeting her. Only because I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would she like me? Would she be a happy child? Would we have fun together? All of these questions ran through my mind as I got ready for the day. Then she arrived. I waited in the lobby of the hotel in Chiang Mai and all of the sudden she came around the corner and I immediately felt my heart flutter. I could not believe how beautiful she was. I have only ever seen TWO photos of Duangdao since I began sponsoring her. Compassion only has enough resources to update your sponsor child’s photo every few years or so, so I could not wait to be able to see her in real life. She was smiling from ear to ear as she clung to her mom out of feeling shy. Compassion arranged for her mother, younger sister, and a translator to be a part  of the day so Duangdao would feel comfortable and so we could communicate with each other since I do not speak Thai whatsoever. We hopped in the truck they came in and headed off to the zoo. They told me to get in the backseat and sit next to Duangdao… I was thrilled. I asked her if she had ever been to the zoo, she said that she had 2 times but had never been to the special panda area or to the aquarium. Well, I decided it was time she got that opportunity! We arrived and headed into the zoo. Duangdao had the map, and led the way. This child is so very well behaved. If someone told her to slow down or wait, she would listen immediately. The entire day she was on her best behavior and it was so easy to tell that she was such a good kid. Even her baby sister was a happy baby and didn’t fuss or anything. I was SO happy and so relieved to finally be able to see Duangdao’s amazing personality. She skipped, laughed, smiled… all day. I was so happy to be able to bring her to the zoo, a place she clearly loved. The translator would always have me and Duangdao sit next to each other no matter what activity we were doing. She would say, “this is you and Duangdao’s day!” LOVED IT. I felt so special and I hoped Duangdao did as well. I asked what her name meant, and they told me, “little star”. *HEART,MELT*— Seriously? Little Star? PERFECT. I asked if Little Star knew who I was, or what I was to her. They told me that she knows exactly who I am… I am her sponsor and I help take care of her. They said she has my picture hanging in her home and that she prays for me. *HEART,MELT* – omg! I couldn’t believe it. I have truly always loved and admired Compassion for what they do, but I have to be honest in saying that this experience has made me love and respect them even more. This day I spent with my Little Star could not have been more amazing and incredible than it was. It was everything I had dreamed and hoped it would be and more. Everyone, from the people in the states, to the workers in Thailand who helped make this day possible for Duangdao and me, were AMAZING and so very kind.

I loved my day with Duangdao. I love that she warmed up to me in no time at all. I love that even though we live opposite sides of the world, and do not speak each other’s language, that I am able to show this beautiful child that she is loved. By me and by God. I fought tears throughout the entire day. I would catch myself looking at her and really thinking about what I was doing for her. And how I was making a difference in her life and that she would always be taken care of until she becomes an adult. I cannot express what an amazing and fulfilling feeling that is. If you don’t sponsor a child, you should. It’s only $38 a month. That’s a meal at a decent restaurant. A small sacrifice on your part goes a reeeeeallly long way. I learned that day that Duangdao’s father makes about $100 a month. So the next time you want to complain about something, just think about that.

Thank you Compassion SO SO SO much for all you do for children all over the world. And thank you for helping make this day possible for me and Duangdao. I will never ever forget it. I can’t wait to go back and visit my Little Star again!

Seriously, could she be any cuter?

Her favorite thing we did that day was the aquarium. She LOVES fish.

So sweet as she feeds her baby sister.

This would be her feeding the fish a BOTTLE. No joke, the fish drink out of bottles in Thailand. Just watch the video below if you don’t believe me.

Praying over our lunch, sigh.

You know there was no way I was going to let this day end without having her pose for a couple of photos!

After the zoo, we headed back to my hotel and I gave her some gifts I brought.

And a few photos of me and my dog.

The nail polish was her favorite.

It was so sweet, she even brought me a gift (not pictured)… a sweet little Thailand purse!

Thank you God for such a beautiful child and beautiful day. Check out a little video clip from this special day:
